Our specialism
Accountants for the construction industry
Every client we have is in construction. Contractors, subcontractors, builders and trades across Leeds, Yorkshire and the UK. Here's who we help and what we sort out.
Who we help
If you work on sites, or pay people who do, you're our kind of client

Contractors
Firms that pay subcontractors. Monthly CIS returns, verifications, reverse charge VAT and payroll for the crew.

Subcontractors
Sparkies, plumbers, groundworkers and labourers who get 20% taken off at source and want it checked every year.

Builders and developers
Small builders, extension specialists and developers juggling retentions, stage payments and materials on several jobs.

Tradespeople
Joiners, tilers, plasterers, roofers, fitters. Sole traders and one-van limited companies who'd rather be on the tools.

Common headaches
The things that go wrong when your accountant doesn't do construction
We see the same problems in nearly every set of books that lands on our desk from a general practice. None of them are hard to fix once you know the trade.
CIS taken off, never claimed back
Thousands of subbies overpay every year because nobody checks the statements against the real tax bill.
The reverse charge
VAT invoices between contractors and subcontractors follow different rules. Get it wrong and HMRC, or your customer, comes knocking.
Retentions and stage payments
Money you've earned but haven't got yet. It needs recording properly or your accounts, and your tax, are wrong.
Cash flow that never sits still
Big materials bills up front, payment 30 or 60 days later. You need to know what's coming before it hits.
Vans, tools and mileage
Allowable costs that often go unclaimed because the receipts are in the glovebox.
Sole trader or limited?
The right answer changes as you grow. The wrong one costs you tax, or paperwork you didn't need.
How we help
Built around how a job actually runs
- We speak construction. You won't have to explain what a subbie, a retention or a day rate is.
- Receipts by photo on WhatsApp. No shoebox, no spreadsheet unless you want one.
- Deadlines on our wall: the 19th, VAT quarters, 31 January and your year end.
- Fixed monthly fee agreed up front, so you can budget for us like any other overhead.
- Straight answers. If you're owed a refund we'll say so. If you're not, we'll say that too.

CIS made simple
The Construction Industry Scheme, in plain English
CIS is how HMRC collects tax in construction. It catches almost everyone who works for, or pays, another construction business. Here's how it works, and where we come in.
If you're a subcontractor
- 1
Your contractor takes tax off your pay before you get it. Usually 20%, or 30% if you're not registered.
- 2
That money goes to HMRC as an advance payment towards your tax bill.
- 3
At the end of the tax year your real tax is worked out. If too much was taken, you may be owed some back.
If you're a contractor
- 1
You must register for CIS and check (verify) each subcontractor with HMRC.
- 2
You take the right deduction off their pay and send it to HMRC.
- 3
You file a CIS return every month, even if there's nothing to report, unless you've told HMRC you're inactive.
What we help with
- CIS registration for subcontractors and contractors
- Verifying subcontractors and monthly CIS returns
- Checking whether you're owed a CIS tax refund
- Applying for gross payment status, if you qualify
- Claiming allowable expenses like tools, van and mileage
CIS refund explainer
Estimate onlyA rough guide to how a CIS refund can come about. It is not a calculation of what you're owed and not tax advice. Slide the figures to see how it changes.
A simplified illustration for a sole trader using 2025/26 income tax bands. It ignores National Insurance, other income, student loans and many other factors. Your actual position could be very different. We'll check your figures properly and tell you whether you're owed a refund.

Brilliant service and an amazing company, always goes that extra mile to make sure everything you want is completed and on time. Will recommend to everyone I know, and I would recommend anyone to use this company — they never disappoint.
